The Robert Bateman 6" x 9" sketchbook is the perfect companion for any drawing adventure.  On the inside cover you’ll find a detailed story about the book itself, including words from Bob Bateman and the World Wildlife Fund.  These books are made in Canada and have been around for decades with same Mountain Goat sketch on the cover.

While these sketchbooks are sold in a variety of sizes, for my needs, the “Little Landscape” book is perfect.  Pocket sized books are too cramped while the larger books weigh down my backpack and become a burden on long hikes.  The spiral binding allows the pages to lay flat and it balances well when held in your palm and resting on your forearm.

The 100% recycled paper is of a very high quality.  I draw with graphite and ink, but the stock is robust enough that it’ll accept light washes without any buckling.  I painted several layers of watercolour over this pen drawing of a Blue Jay wing and the paper is still flat.  If you’re going to soak the page, then you really should be using a watercolour block or a rigid watercolour board.

Sakura Micron pens respond really well with this paper.  Ballpoints, roller-balls, brush pens and fountain pens are also suitable.  I originally had problems with bleeding lines when I used a metal dip pen and bottled ink, but it was resolved once I switched to a higher quality Indian Ink.

Overall, I highly recommend the Robert Bateman 6" x 9" sketchbook.  It’s the ideal size when you’re on the move and working on location, plus the quality of the paper will not disappoint.
