“Look for the radiance in the ordinary”

Making art doesn’t require spectacular mountains or epic landscapes...some of the best subjects to draw can be found right in our everyday lives.  Searching for wonders in the mundane will change how you see the world, not to mention, it’s plenty of fun. 

Keep a small sketchbook handy and use it to record your surroundings.  You might sketch the gnarled roots of a tree or bits and pieces that have washed up along the shore (hopefully not human bits and pieces!)  Perhaps you’ve found a bird’s nest in your backyard or have a collection of rusty tools in the shed.  A trip to your local market can yield a bounty of fascinating objects to draw.  Fungus, leafy greens and lumpy root vegetables are personal favourites.  Fungus can be fun!

Over time, you’ll discover beauty in what others consider unremarkable.  That’s the radiance.  Sometimes it’s hidden and requires a bit of digging, but once found, you’ll always be on the lookout for it.
