Sketching in the woods

I had a pleasant surprise while sitting in the woods of High Park sketching this amazing old tree.  The morning was very still and I was well into this sketch when suddenly in my peripheral vision I caught sight of a blur racing from the tree tops towards the ground.  There was a brief commotion, but it quickly settled back to silence and from my vantage point I could see nothing through the foliage.

I went back to my business of sketching only to be startled moments later at the sound of a piercing bird call that seemed almost on top of me.  I looked up from my sketchbook to see a very large Coopers Hawk staring at me from the same area of the earlier commotion.  This very impressive hawk flew to a branch closer to my position and looked me over before making several more piercing calls.  Losing interest with an artist sketching in the woods, the Coopers Hawk swooped off into deeper forest, no doubt in search of unsuspecting squirrels and young hares.
