Pine cones and driftwood are subjects that I like to have people draw in my classes. Most folks would consider these items rather ordinary and not worthy of attention, but that’s exactly what makes them so appealing; it’s the job of the artist to look deeply and reveal beauty in the mundane.
The workshop attendees have been working hard these past couple weeks learning how to use dip pens and sanguine (red earth colour) pencils. It’s not easy. Each session, I’ve been increasing the difficulty level, which results in more struggles, but I think that’s a good thing! There wouldn’t be much to learn if all adversity was stripped away.
