Study of a Robin

With a rapidly decomposing Robin on my hands, I had to abandon my original idea of painting with watercolour pencils and went instead with soft (B-3B) pencils on Stonehenge paper, a much quicker option.  I don’t normally like soft graphite but when matched with the paper’s fawn colour and texture, seemed to help pull the entire drawing together.

I worked on the drawing in spurts because every few hours I would put the Robin into the freezer to slow down decomposition and stop it from becoming too putrid before I could finish.   My biggest struggle was drawing the wing feathers accurately while keeping them looking delicate.
